Liberal Hopefuls

It was interesting to see a report yesterday about the amount of money the many Liberal leadership candidates has raised. The results are both amusing and interesting. The leading fundraisers, according to the report, are Michael Ignatieff and Bob Rae. Other candidates are apparently a long way behind in raising money, making these two appear to be significant frontrunners. So what can be said about them?

Let's start with Bob - that's Bob, not Robert (if you don't believe me, check out his website) - Rae. Rae started out life as a New Democrat (so he had it right once), but it seems he's become a Liberal. Uh-huh. Rae has been a public presence as the result of his work on a couple of commissions, including one which examined post-secondary education in Ontario. As a result of my job, I participated in a number of events related to that endeavour - make no mistake, Rae is no New Democrat these days. Believe him when he says he is now a Liberal.

Michael - he doesn't seem like a Mike - Ignatieff is an academic who hasn't lived in Canada for decades. His political experience is, well, non-existent.  He did run (and win) as a candidate last time. On the other hand, look where people with political experience have gotten us. Part of Iggy's appeal (I stole that from here) is probably that he reminds people of Trudeau. On the other hand, no matter how you cut if, he is a right wing candidate - his support for Dubya and the war in Iraq are examples of his views.

Hmm, let's review the choices then. A political turncoat on the left, and a political neophyte academic on the right. Says a lot about the Liberal Party these days. Stephen Harper must be very pleased.

An Inconvenient Truth

I saw Al Gore's film, An Inconvenient Truth, yesterday. He presents a picture which is already quite well known to anyone paying attention to environmental issues. For those who've had blinders on, though, it is a good presentation to get your attention. And, for those who already know the story, some of his graphics are worth the price of admission. You may find it slightly self-serving on Gore's part, but I don't suppose you get to the level of political achievement he did without a healthy ego.

Certainly worth 4 somethings (stars, thumbs, whatever) out of five. If it isn't playing near you, the DVD is due out in September. A disclaimer, though - hard core types will come away saying he doesn't go far enough, or that his outlook is too optimistic. The rest of you might ponder that, after you see it - this is the optimistic version of the future!

You Get What You Pay For

I've been moving this site around from host to host the last couple of months. The first move was about cost - I found a much less expensive alternative in PDQ Networks. However, this turned out to be a terrible idea.

PDQ's servers, in the 2 months I used them, were constantly either ridiculously slow or down. Indeed, during the second month, the site was down at least 11% of the time (I say at least because it was certainly more than that, but I'm not always aware it is down).  Even for a personal site, no one could tolerate that level of instability. Belatedly, I did some research on PDQ (one review is here), and found out that the problems I experienced are typical.

So, I guess that old maxim is true - you get what you pay for. I'm with a new - more expensive and better-researched - host, and the site should now be very reliable.

Up & Running

It has taken me more time than I expected, but everything is now up and running again on the new server. Please leave a comment if you see anything odd.
